ITALIAN ENGLISH
L'alma mia fiammma oltra le belle bella,
ch'ebbe qui 'l ciel sí amico et sí cortese,
anzi tempo per me nel suo paese
è ritornata, et a la par sua stella.

Or comincio a svegliarmi, et veggio ch'ella
per lo migliore al mio desir contese,
et quelle voglie giovenili accese
temprò con una visita dolce et fella.

Lei ne ringratio, e 'l suo alto consiglio,
che col bel viso et co' soavi sdegni
faceami ardendo pensar mia salute.

O leggiadre arti et lor effetti degni,
l'un co la lingua oprar, l'altra col ciglio,
io gloria in lei, et ella in me virtute!
My soul, my flame, loveliest of the lovely,
who was so courteous a friend of heaven,
has returned to her country, too soon
for me, and entered her own sphere.

Now I am beginning to wake and see,
that she resisted my desire for the better,
and tempered that young burning passion
with a sweet and fierce aspect.

I'm not ungrateful to her, and her high counsel,
who with her lovely face and soft disdain
made me, burning, think of my salvation.

O gracious arts, and their effects are true,
one works his tongue, the other her eyes,
I for her glory, and she for my good!
